Chandigarh: Ina mach awa ited development, the Punjab and Haryana high court ad ministration has designated 76 lawyersassenior advocates a designation conferred on advocates possessing “ability standing at the Bar, or specia liand knowledge or experien ce in law”
The list includes five wo men. Those de signated as senior advocates are considered legal experts, and this is a prestigious desig nation for accomplished legal practitioners in the country The Bar Council of Indis roof les provide that senior adso cates are subject to certain th restrictions, as they cannot fi in le vakalatnamas, draft plea m dings, or appear without a juc nior counsel A notification reganding the designation of senior ad vocates at the HC was issued un Monday by the registrar general of the high court.
“In exercise of the powersconfer red under Section 8C of the Advocates Act 1961, the High Court of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh has been pien and to designate the advoentes as amior advocates with of fect from October 18” says the notification.
Prominent among the 76 designated as senior advoca tns are Jasdev Singh Mehndi ratta, Vikas Chatrath, Sartej Singh Narula, Sukant Gupta, Sukhiinder Singh Behl, Ka mal Sehgal, Ashu Mohan
As per the notification. these senior advocaten are be ing designated subject to the condition that they would conduct 10 free legal aid cases pro bonoevery year Section 16 of the Advocates Act provides that there shall be two classes uf advocates, namedy senior advocates and other advoca tes. In Mar 2134, the HC admi nistration invited applica tions for redesignation as se nior advocates for whicharo und 2007 lawyers applied. To be designated a senior advocate, are needs 10 yours of standing a lawyer.
BCI curbs on sr advocates Asenior adsocate shall not file a vakalatnama or act in any court, tribunal, or before any person or other authority mentioned in Section 30 of the Act.
